How to Write a Research Paper Outline

Before starting to write a research paper outline, you should remember some rules of thumb, which can be applied to any outline, which you will compose:
  1. Be sure all parts of your outline relate to the thesis statement of your paper.
  2. Remember that your outline has to serve to convey your ideas in a logical sequence. There are several strategies to accomplish it successfully:
    - Moving from simple ideas to complex ones;
    - Arguing from your weakest points to the strongest ones;
    - Through chronological development.
  3. Make sure that your headings or divisions contain at least two subheadings or subdivisions.
Proceeding to writing a research paper outline, you can apply the following technique in practice.

A nice piece of advice about writing a well-structured outline was given by Justin M. Cohen, an author of the Guide to Writing College Papers. How to Read and Take Notes

Note taking is just the time to develop your skimming talents. When you begin reading the materials from your bibliography, you should start taking notes and writing quotations related to your specific research paper thesis. Use a formal style and voice for your research paper. Do not attempt to be conversational and informal. Avoid using slang words and colloquialisms in your paper; otherwise, your paper will be a doomed undertaking, and you will get a lousy grade.
  • Use your own words as much as possible, and apply direct quotations only in case when the wording in the quotation is exactly as you want.
  • Choose a critical tone for your paper, but not emotional and inflammatory. Do not overstate your position using harsh language.
  • Avoid abbreviations and fragments in your writing. Work hard to achieve a formal style in your research paper.
  • Present your personal perspective on the topic. Although you will extensively rely on the information presented in journals, newspapers, and books, try to generate your own thoughts and ideas.
  • Do not call too much attention to yourself. Beware of using the first personal singular too often in your paper and omit phrases like “I think”, “I agree that...”
  • Vary sentence length to create a rhetorical emphasize. Be sure that abrupt and short sentences are followed by longer ones.

What is Good Persuasive Research Paper Writing All About?

Knowing persuasive techniques can help you express your thoughts and ideas more cogently and coherently. When you practice looking at the argument of the opposition, you learn to argue against the opposition more effectively or even change your mind.

The knight set up a straw man to use as his target and then destroyed it. In this type of persuasion, you first establish what the point of view of the opposition and then destroy it using convincing arguments.

This kind of persuasion is important because it allows you to destroy the arguments of the opposition without insulting a person.

Bits of Advice for Choosing Research Paper Topics. Part I

  • It is okay to write a research paper on very specialized and technical issues, but keep in mind that your topic should involve real feelings and emotions, so that your readers can understand what you are talking about.
  • Bad research paper topics are usually too general and broad, not controversial enough, or entirely dependent on warrants and emotional beliefs.
  • Beware of topics that have not much argument in them, for instance, anorexia nervosa. Moreover, these research paper ideas have too much information available, hence, heaps of ideas repeated over and over.
  • Don’t consider topics for research papers that deal with academic and specialized arguments among experts: arguments which display very little use of ethos and pathos but a good deal of technical knowledge.
  • Avoid research paper topics, in which you are likely to get only one-sided talking because there is nothing to compare in them.

Finding Good Topics for Research Papers is not an Easy Matter

"1. Lack of originality: Do you begin to get that canned feeling? Many of these debates have been rehearsed so many times that it is hard to think anything new on them, much less say anything new. Both you and the person grading your research paper may easily get bored rehashing the same old stuff. Check with your teacher to find out which topics are the ones they are personally sick to death of.

2. Excess and absence of source materials: Some of these topics are so classical and have been discussed so long that there are books and books about them. In that situation it becomes very hard to choose which articles should stand as exemplars for the various sides. You may be overwhelmed by sheer bulk of material. You may have to do a lot of reading and comparing to find out which essays, over the years, have emerged as classics. If you take one of these topics, you are responsible for determining which sources are the best on your topic. This may mean investigating various anthologies to find what essays are frequently reprinted.

Also, as you try to do research in the library, you will find that others have been there before you. It is not uncommon to discover that some asshole has exacto-knifed every article you need out of the bound magazines. When this happens, take your citation of the missing article to the Reference desk and explain the problem.

They will order a xerox of the article and rebind it into the magazine -- probably not in time to help you, but at least you can feel good about doing a service for next year's freshman community. Meanwhile, xeroxes of all articles used for summaries in the research paper must be handed in, so xerox what you need and put the books in the reshelving bin or back on the shelf in the right place so as to make things easier for your fellow students."
I absolutely agree with Dr.Sparks as per the difficulties students face selecting good topics for research papers. Many students struggle with finding outstanding research paper topics that can be both interesting to research and easy to be "won".

Unfortunately, the majority of them become victims of obsolete and stale topics, such as abortion, euthanasia, and smoking, simply because there are a lot of materials available on them. Though, choosing such topics can be a total fiasco for research papers.

That's why it is more reasonable to conduct a research and find out topical and relevant issues that will be interesting for the writer to cover and exciting for the reader to learn more about.

One more hindrance on the way to good research papers is a broad research paper topic. The majority of students choose topics that are too general and can't narrow them to more specific ones. Broad research paper ideas are difficult to cover because there is too much information to choose from, hence, it is difficult to focus the research.

I have been a student for quite some time now and was always hard-pressed to come up with stellar research paper topics. Adventures in Cheating

Students, your semester is almost over. This fall, did you find yourself pulling many bong hits but few all-nighters? Absorbing much Schlitz but little Nietzsche? Attending Arizona State University? If the answer is yes to any or (especially) all these questions, you will no doubt be plagiarizing your term papers.

Good for you—we're all short on time these days. Yes, it's ethically blah blah blah to cheat on a term paper blah. The question is: How do you do it right? For example, the chump move is to find some library book and copy big hunks out of it. No good: You still have to walk to the library, find a decent book, and link the hunks together with your own awful prose. Instead, why not just click on a term paper web site and buy the whole damn paper already written by some smart dude? Que bella! Ah, but which site?

I shopped at several online term paper stores to determine where best to spend your cheating dollar. After selecting papers on topics in history, psychology, and biology, I had each paper graded by one of my judges. These were: Slate writer David Greenberg, who teaches history at Columbia; my dad, who teaches psychology at the University of Rhode Island (sometimes smeared as the ASU of the East); and my girlfriend, who was a teaching assistant in biology at Duke (where she says cheating was quite common). So, which site wins for the best combination of price and paper quality? I compared free sites, sites that sell "pre-written papers," and a site that writes custom papers to your specifications.

Free Sites

A quick Web search turns up dozens of sites filled with free term papers. Some ask you to donate one of your own papers in exchange, but most don't. I chose one from each of our fields for comparison and soon found that when it comes to free papers, you get just about what you pay for. From this site I chose a history paper titled "The Infamous Watergate Scandal." Bad choice. This paper had no thesis, no argument, random capitalization, and bizarre spell-checking errors—including "taking the whiteness stand" (witness) and "the registration of Nixon" (resignation). My judge said if they gave F's at Columbia, well … Instead, it gots a good old "Please come see me." Of the free bio paper I chose from this site, my judge said, "Disturbing. I am still disturbed." It indeed read less like a term paper than a deranged manifesto. Rambling for 11 single-spaced pages and ostensibly on evolutionary theory, it somehow made reference to Lamarck, Sol Invictus, and "the blanket of a superficial American Dream." Meanwhile, it garbled its basic explanation of population genetics. Grade: "I would not give this a grade so much as suggest tutoring, a change in majors, some sort of counseling." This site fared much better. A paper titled "Critically Evaluate Erikson's Psychosocial Theory" spelled Erikson's name wrong in the first sentence, yet still won a C+/B- from my dad. It hit most of the important points—the problem was no analysis. And the citations all came from textbooks, not real sources. Oddly, this paper also used British spellings ("behaviour") for no apparent reason. But all in all not terrible, considering it was free., purely on style points, was my favorite site. The name comes from an old hip-hop song ("You down with O-P-P?" meaning other people's ... genitalia), the site has pictures of coed babes, and one paper in the psych section was simply the phrase "I wanna bang Angelina Jolie" typed over and over again for several pages. Hey, whaddaya want for free?

Sites Selling Pre-Written Papers

There are dozens of these—I narrowed it down to three sites that seemed fairly reputable and were stocked with a wide selection. (In general, the selection offered on pay sites was 10 times bigger than at the free ones.) Each pay site posted clear disclaimers that you're not to pass off these papers as your own work. Sure you're not. This site charged $7 per page, and I ordered "The Paranoia Behind Watergate" for $35. Well worth it. My history judge gave it the highest grade of all the papers he saw—a B or maybe even a B+. Why? It boasted an actual argument. A few passages, however, might set off his plagiarism radar (or "pladar"). They show almost too thorough a command of the literature.

My other purchase here was a $49 bio paper titled "The Species Concept." Despite appearing in the bio section of the site, this paper seemed to be for a philosophy class. Of course, no way to know that until after you've bought it (the pay sites give you just the title and a very brief synopsis of each paper). My judge would grade this a C- in an intro bio class, as its conclusion was "utterly meaningless," and it tossed around "airy" philosophies without actually understanding the species concept at all. For about $10 per page, I ordered two papers from the Paper Store, which is also and For $50.23, I bought "Personality Theory: Freud and Erikson," by one Dr. P. McCabe (the only credited author on any of these papers. As best I can tell, the global stock of papers for sale is mostly actual undergrad stuff with a few items by hired guns thrown in). The writing style here was oddly mixed, with bad paraphrasing of textbooks—which is normal for a freshman—side by side with surprisingly clever and polished observations. Grade: a solid B.

My other Paper Store paper was "Typical Assumptions of Kin Selection," bought for $40.38. Again, a pretty good buy. It was well-written, accurate, and occasionally even thoughtful. My bio judge would give it a B in a freshman class. Possible pladar ping: The writer seemed to imply that some of his ideas stemmed from a personal chat with a noted biologist. But overall, the Paper Store earned its pay. (aka In some ways this is the strangest site, as most of the papers for sale were written between 1978 and '83. I would guess this is an old term paper source, which has recently made the jump to the Web. From its history section, I bought a book report on Garry Wills' Nixon Agonistes for $44.75, plus a $7.45 fee for scanning all the pages—the paper was written in 1981, no doubt on a typewriter. Quality? It understood the book but made no critique—a high-school paper. My judge would give it a D.

I next bought "Personality as Seen by Erikson, Mead, and Freud" from A1 Termpaper for $62.65 plus a $10.43 scanning fee. Also written in 1981, this one had the most stylish prose of any psych paper and the most sophisticated thesis, but it was riddled with factual errors. For instance, it got Freud's psychosexual stages completely mixed up and even added some that don't exist (the correct progression is oral-anal-phallic-latency-genital, as if you didn't know). Showing its age, it cited a textbook from 1968 and nothing from after '69 (and no, that's not another Freudian stage, gutter-mind). Grade: Dad gave it a C+. In the end, A1 was pricey, outdated, and not a good buy.

With all these pre-written papers, though, it occurred to me that a smart but horribly lazy student could choose to put his effort into editing instead of researching and writing: Buy a mediocre paper that's done the legwork, then whip it into shape by improving the writing and adding some carefully chosen details. Not a bad strategy.

Papers Made To Order My final buy was a custom-made paper written to my specifications. Lots of sites do this, for between $17 and $20 per page. claims all its writers have "at least one Master's Degree" and charges $17.95 per page. I typed this request (posing as a professor's assignment, copied verbatim) into its Web order form: "A 4-page term paper on David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest. Investigate the semiotics of the 'addicted gaze' as represented by the mysterious film of the book's title. Possible topics to address include nihilism, figurative transgendering, the culture of entertainment, and the concept of 'infinite gestation.' "

This assignment was total hooey. It made no sense whatsoever. Yet it differed little from papers I was assigned as an undergrad English major at Brown.

After a few tries (one woman at the 800 number told me they were extremely busy), my assignment was accepted by Paper Masters, with a deadline for one week later. Keep in mind, Infinite Jest is an 1,100-page novel (including byzantine footnotes), and it took me almost a month to read even though I was completely engrossed by it. In short, there's no way anyone could 1) finish the book in time; and 2) write anything coherent that addressed the assignment.
I began to feel guilty. Some poor writer somewhere was plowing through this tome, then concocting a meaningless mishmash of words simply to fill four pages and satisfy the bizarre whims of a solitary, heartless taskmaster (me). But then I realized this is exactly what I did for all four years of college—and I paid them for the privilege!

When the custom paper came back, it was all I'd dreamed. Representative sentence: "The novel's diverse characters demonstrate both individually and collectively the fixations and obsessions that bind humanity to the pitfalls of reality and provide a fertile groundwork for the semiotic explanation of addictive behavior." Tripe. The paper had no thesis and in fact had no body—not one sentence actually advanced a cogent idea. I'm guessing it would have gotten a C+ at Brown—maybe even a B-. If I were a just slightly lesser person, I might be tempted by this service. One custom paper off the Web: $71.80. Not having to dredge up pointless poppycock for some po-mo obsessed, overrated lit-crit professor: priceless.

In Defense of Cheating

Preamble: No, I am not in favor of deception, trickery, fraud, or swindle. What I wish to change are the curriculum and examination practices of our school systems that insist on unaided work, arbitrary learning of irrelevant and uninteresting facts. I'd like to move them toward an emphasis on understanding, on knowing how to get to an answer rather than knowing the answer, and on cooperation rather than isolation. Cheating that involves deceit is, of course wrong, but we should examine the school practices that lead to cheating: change the practices, and the deceit will naturally diminish.

Students cheat. There is no way of avoiding this fact. Students hand in homework and project assignments copied from others, or written by their parents, or even purchased. Students copy from one another on examinations, and they try to discover advance information about examinations. When cheating involves deceit, trickery, fraud, or swindle it must be prohibited. But the proper solution to the problem is not through prohibition and punishment: it is through examination of the sources. Why do even our best students feel compelled either to cheat, or to help other students, or to watch while others cheat, without taking action. I believe that the root cause of cheating in our school systems lies with inappropriate curricula and examinations. Change the practices and the cheating should naturally diminish.

Consider this: in many ways, the behavior we call cheating in schools is exactly the behavior we desire in the real world. Think about it. What behavior do we call cheating in the school system? Asking others for help, copying answers, copying papers.

Most of these activities are better called "networking" or "cooperative work." In the workplace these behaviors are encouraged and rewarded. Thus, many experts will tell you that their real expertise lies not in what they know but rather in who they know: that is, expertise is often knowing whom to ask and where to look. When we have problems in the real world, we want answers, no matter the source, which means searching to find someone else who has experienced the same problem, asking others for help, and cooperating.

Cooperative Versus Individual Work

In schools we over-emphasize individual work. Perhaps the only place where individual, isolated work is encouraged and cooperative work punished is in the school systems. In examinations, not only is it prohibited to copy other's work or to ask others for help, but it usually isn't possible to refer to books or, oh my goodness, the Internet. Yet these are all important skills in the world outside of schools. Students should be taught how to work effectively in teams, how to use reference works, how to use the Internet effectively, and especially how to find the significant from the non-significant, to distinguish quality from nonsense.

Our instructional philosophies are short-sighted. This insistence upon unaided, individual work is the result of the long-established policy of grading: each individual is ranked through the assignment of a numerical or letter score that is meant to reflect their mastery of the subject matter. But does it? First of all, are the examinations effective? Do they encourage understanding or do they emphasize the arbitrary recitation of material that is examinable. We know from our own experience, supported by numerous formal studies, that students cram for exams, regurgitate the material at exam time, and seldom retain it afterwards.

How much better to reward procedures for coming up with answers. Emphasize understanding of the issues and knowledge of how to gain insight and resolution. Emphasize cooperation.
Consider plagiarization. The sin of plagiarization is not that it involves copying -- this should be rewarded -- but that it doesn't give credit for the originator. Deceit is wrong: it should be avoided. The problem is that the current system of homework and examinations emphasize the individual activity, oftentimes in sterile, meaningless exercises, ones that are easy to grade. Grades are important in determining the future of each student, even though they measure only a fraction of a person's ability and potential, and quite often do a poor job even of the aspects they pretend to measure. It is no wonder that teachers teach to the exam, that students study for the exam, that true understanding and exploration of issues is discouraged if it will detract from time that could be spent studying for the exam. The grading system, moreover, is often on a curve, with a fixed percentage of students receiving each letter grade. This means it is a zero-sum game: a person can only get a higher grade if someone else receives a lower grade.

No wonder the intense competition, no wonder the cramming for exams, no wonder cheating -- anything to get ahead. No wonder copying without attribution, for the students feel compelled to lie: the student who finds just the perfect essay and presents it to the instructor receives no credit if the essay was written by someone else. But suppose the student got credit for finding the essay, that the reward was based upon just how relevant and insightful that essay really was? And if both the student who presented the essay and the originator of the essay received credit?

This is a tricky concept. Thus, if one student writes a paper and another simply copies it, no, that's not what we are trying to encourage, not even if full credit is given to the original. The goal is to support cooperative work, where everyone contributes, each according to their abilities, but that those abilities are recorded and become part of the student transcript. In other words, the goal is not to rank order the students by some arbitrary mark of performance measure, which is what grades do, but rather to determine a student's true attributes and skills and to record them accurately. Some students are scholars, others leaders. Some are team players, others not. Some are generalists, others specialists. The goal is accurate characterization. We do not need value judgments among the attributes: society needs all of them.

In a system where copying is punished, the student feels compelled to lie. Suppose that copying were encouraged -- honest copying, where the source must be revealed. And suppose that both the copier and the originator of the material were rewarded, the originator for their contribution and the copier for knowing where to seek the information. This would reinforce the correct behaviors, minimize deceit, and encourage cooperativeness.

Take a tip from the "recommendation" sites on the Internet, where contributors are rated on the basis of their effectiveness and usefulness to others. We should grade students on their effectiveness in forming coalitions in organizing groups, and in the nature of their contributions to the group work. Thus, if one person is frequently copied, that person's stature as a contributor should rise. Similarly, if a person makes no original contribution, but is effective at forming coalitions that solve problems, that person's status as an organizer should rise.

We could change the educational system to make it more relevant to the world, to teach proper social skills, and at the same time eliminate the deceitful, hidden acts of cheating by recognizing cheating for the good that it brings: group activities toward a common end.

Mastery Grading

Today, the grading system fosters a competitive, zero-sum game spirit in which if one student wins, the others lose. I have long been bothered by the system of grading on the curve, forcing students to compete rather than cooperate. I favor grading to absolute standards. Determine what is to be learned and measure how successful each student is in their accomplishments. If every student gets an A, hurrah! It means every student has learned.

If every student gets an A, this does not mean that all students are equal. Not at all: some students can accomplish more than others, and this difference should be noted. But suppose we replace the fixed curriculum and its rigid grading scheme with a new procedure in which different students would do different work and their "grade" would be a list of their accomplishments? Evaluate students on their mastery level: mastery grading. In addition, evaluate them on their ability to work with others, either by being a productive team member, by organizing the team, or by their ability to contribute toward the solution.

Suppose the grading system measured level of accomplishment. Suppose the school curriculum were divided into modules of useful knowledge or skills, each relatively small (a week or two of class, perhaps even a few hours). Each student is mentored, and the module is marked as complete only when the student masters it. In other words, grade on a "Pass" basis. But only use "Pass" -- do not use a "Fail" or "Not-Pass" grade. A student either knows the stuff or doesn't, and in the latter case, the student is encouraged to keep learning.

Some modules should be mandatory: some optional. Schools could require that students complete the mandatory modules as well as a specified number of others, perhaps requiring a distribution across disciplines. The major structure of a curriculum need not change. The major point of mastery grading is that evaluation specifies the modules completed rather than today's attempt at measuring the quality of accomplishment of a fixed-length course. A student transcript would list the set of modules completed satisfactorily.

Admission to higher grades or to universities -- or even employment -- could be based upon what students know. Schools or employers would not look at grade point averages, rather they would judge students by their particular skills, by their ability to work in teams, and by the set of modules that they have mastered.

Note that changing to modular education with mastery grading also means changing today's system of lock-step education. Today, if students fail at some topic, when they are moved to the next grade, they no longer have exposure to it, even if they wish to. In a modular system, students could study the modules they need or that they are interested in, regardless of grade level.

In the end, the students possess a list of topics that they understand. Some will have completed many modules, some just the minimum required. Some will have modules that reflect a broad range of topics, some more narrow, but deeper knowledge. Instead of arbitrary ranking through grade-point averages, each student is characterized by their accomplishments.
Restructuring the School System.

In this essay, I focus upon changes to curriculum and instruction that would change the emphasis in school systems from that of competition to cooperation, from arbitrary grading on the curve to mastery assessment of a student's accomplishments. But these changes are only part of the restructuring required of our educational systems. Many more changes are needed.
We need to get away from the lecture-centered method of teaching. We need to emphasize "learning," not "teaching." Teaching is about the teacher. Learning is about the student. The emphasis should be on doing, on activities: "learning by doing."

Yes, depth of understanding should be encouraged, but this is best nourished when there is true interest and excitement, which often means project-based instruction, where teachers act as mentors and guides to the material. None of this is particularly new: many others have advocated this form of education, starting with John Dewey in the early 1900s. But changes in teaching can not take place without changes in the curriculum and in the way we assess students.

We need to rethink the curriculum, for today, we try to cram everything we think the student will ever need to know into their heads in a relatively short period. Instead, we need to train curiosity, self-reliance, cooperative skills, and knowledge of how to learn on their own, knowledge that will be of value for the 2/3 of their lives that remain after the completion of formal schooling.

This problem while in exaggeration often happens to students. It is like all the teachers decide to overwhelm the students in their classes with not only tests on the same day but also term papers, essays, or other writing assignments. This is the reason most students hate writing term papers or other types of writing.

Other reasons for disliking writing assignments are poor English classes in high school, often instructors fail to explain different essay writing styles, unsure of topics to write, and instructors fail to read the writing assignments. While students hate writing term papers when there are several due at the same time sometimes it is a matter of timing and preparation. If the syllabus tells when different term papers are due, then begin preparing as early as possible. When more than one instructors assign term papers that will be due at the same time, try talking to the essay instructors and asking for different due dates will help.
